The Hallmark/BIS certification standards are laid out by the Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Organization in India.

The BIS/Hallmark certification helps accurately determine, authenticate, and officially record the proportionate content of precious metal in precious metal jewellery. The Hallmark/BIS system certifies both gold and silver jewellery in terms of the purity of the metal. The stamp of the BIS hallmark on all jewellery shows the purity of the jewellery, which is checked at a Hallmark/BIS-certified center.

The hallmark majorly constitutes a BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) mark denoted using a triangle, the karat age number indicating the purity of the jewellery, along with the logo of the assaying center including the code of the jewelers and the code that indicates the hallmarking number date.
